Dr. Leila Kohan is an Associate Professor at the Islamic Azad University and holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology. She has over two decades of experience in educational, research, and diagnostic activities in the fields of life sciences and medical genetics. Drawing on her strong academic background, extensive university experience, and continuous involvement in clinical diagnostic settings, she has played a significant role in applying genetic and cytogenetic knowledge to laboratory-based disease diagnosis. Her primary professional focus is on the accurate diagnosis of genetic and chromosomal disorders and on improving the quality of laboratory services based on evidence-based scientific principles.
Dr. Kohan’s areas of expertise include cytogenetic diagnosis of chromosomal abnormalities; evaluation of numerical and structural chromosomal alterations; performance and interpretation of peripheral blood and bone marrow karyotyping; analysis of genetic findings in congenital and acquired disorders; and the application of molecular genetics in the diagnosis of multifactorial diseases. She also has extensive theoretical and practical experience in cancer genetics, infertility, metabolic disorders, epigenetics, and the investigation of genetic polymorphisms.
Dr. Kohan has more than ten years of experience as Head of the Cytogenetics Section at Dr. Daneshbod Pathobiology Laboratory. Since 2014, she has been continuously active in this laboratory and has been responsible for planning, organization, supervision, and quality control of diagnostic processes in the cytogenetics unit. Her core responsibilities have included performing, interpreting, and reporting specialized karyotype analyses and identifying chromosomal abnormalities.
She has also completed one year of collaboration within a joint educational program with the Cytogenetics Department of Dr. Shariati Hospital in Tehran. This experience played a substantial role in strengthening her clinical skills, enhancing the accuracy of cytogenetic result interpretation, and developing a patient-centered approach to laboratory diagnostics.
In addition to her diagnostic responsibilities, Dr. Kohan has extensive teaching experience at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels in disciplines related to biology, genetics, and cellular and molecular biology. She has taught a wide range of courses, including Advanced Molecular Genetics, Cancer Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology, Epigenetics, Bioinformatics, and Research Methodology. Supervision and academic advising of postgraduate theses form a significant part of her academic portfolio.
Dr. Leila Kohan is the author and co-author of more than 100 scientific publications presented in reputable national and international journals and conferences. A complete list of her publications is available at:
